Snickers Salad

This was one of the recipes published in today's food section of the local newspaper. The article was about a cookbook being produced that includes ECU (East Carolina University) tailgating recipes. I'm not sure what to think of it. On one hand, I like each of the ingredients individually, but I'm a little grossed out by putting them all together and calling it a "salad".

Snickers Salad
5 Granny Smith apples
5 Snickers bars
1 16-oz container Cool Whip

Core and chop apples into bite-sized pieces. Slice the Snickers into bite-sized pieces. Mix them in a bowl with the Cool Whip. Keep chilled.

If anyone is willing to try this out (maybe just 1/5 of the recipe for starters!), let me know what you think.

omg ann - what a fabulous recipe! I've come across similar ones when I found an old roommate's mom's church cookbook from a rural town in southern Minnesota. Every salad called for cool whip and every dessert called for some kind of cereal. It was about this time that I fell in love with the ubiquitous "hot dish" which usually includes a crust made of tater tots, saltines, or potato chips. I say go for it! If it's a "salad" it's got to be good for you dangnabit!

i did a little figuring and came up with 2,750 calories for the entire "salad". if you assume there are 10 servings, that comes to 275 calories per serving (which is less than i would have thought). hardly health food, but their are many snacks that are worse for you.

i used to love coolwhip when i was a kid. lately i don't really have a taste for it. give me a stiffly beaten whipped cream with sugar and vanilla any day. snickers and apples, however, i still like.

The snickers bars and apples could be deep fried before they are mixed up with the CoolWhip. I think that would help boost the calories per serving.

or enrobe the apples in a thick coating of caramel?

The State Fair is coming...maybe use candied apples. Or get really fancy and make a trifle with Snickers Salad and cotton candy layers.
